Hunting On A Military Testing Base

My buddy Jake drew a special reserve hunt tag in Indiana to hunt Big Oaks Wildlife Refuge, which parts of it still sees some military testing. Throughout this 55,000 acre piece of land, it is littered with some old munition shells that we had to be aware of trudging through this beautifully weird piece of property. ( We did not touch nor contact any old munition rounds).

We had a great time on this piece of property even though our deer sitings were limited. A couple factors went into that, one was that we were unable to scout the prior days due to park regulations. All in all, it was a fun hunt, and a great adventure.

Honestly, hunting on a military testing base sounds like one of those topics where safety rules and permissions matter way more than the activity itself. I’d always recommend checking legal access and local regulations first, because things can get complicated fast in restricted areas. It’s interesting how niche communities operate with strict guidelines, similar to how creative industries work too. Even in media, like audiobook publishing companies, there are clear rules and structured processes people have to follow.
